Air mattress or air bed is a mattress that is filled with air, instead of using spring for support, it uses air chambers. The prices vary from inexpensive ones to high-end luxury beds.  It is also called inflatable mattress or sleeping pads. It may also refer to water toy, which serves as a floating mattress when we are on the water.

It is usually made of PVC vinyl and textile-reinforced urethane rubber or plastic. When it is deflated, it can be rolled up or folded up so it will be easily carried or stored. You can use it as temporary bedding or permanent one. Sizes are ranging from twin to king so you can use standard bed sheets and bedding.

Types of air mattress:

  • Air mattresses as regular beds – It was in 1981 when Comfortaire started manufacturing and marketing this mattress that looked conventional. Users can adjust the firmness. It was in 1987 when they patented and marketed the air mattress. It has a variety of models from basic to high profile.
  • Self-inflating air mattresses- it is usually use by hikers and campers because no pump is needed. It will expand when the air valve of the mattress is opened and breathe in air.
  • Air mattresses for medical use – it was in 1990’s when the industry started to produce this kind of bed, a self-adjusting air bed that will reduce bed sores problems, though the effectiveness is not yet proven.

Uses of air mattress:

  • Great for camping and backpacking because it of its lightweight, reduced size and thickness.  It is easy to carry and store.
  • You can use this as temporary bedding for visitors to keeps them elevated from the floor for more traditional mattress experience.
  • You also have the option to use this as your permanent bed.
  • Lastly, for medical use.
